You can imagine that Word Search puzzles have been around for centuries. Crosswords first appeared in 1890, and Scrabble was invented in 1938. But in fact the first Word Search puzzle didn't appear until 1968.
It was created by Norman E. Gibat and published in a small classified-listings newspaper called the Selenby Digest in Norman, Oklahoma. Teachers in the area began to use the puzzles in their classrooms and soon they were being syndicated nationally.
Word search puzzles are also known as word search, word find, word seek, word sleuth and mystery word.
